Being a business owner can be a very stressful job. You have to worry about everything from managing your employees to keeping up with the competition. If you don't know how to manage your stress, it can quickly start to take a toll on your health.

According to a recent survey conducted by Sensis, a significant percentage of business owners are struggling with stress. The survey, which polled customers from a wide range of sectors across the country, found that 40 per cent of respondents are experiencing stress in their work lives.

Even more concerning is the fact that 72 per cent of those surveyed do not seek any help for their stress. This problem is most prevalent among small business operators aged 51 or above. Luckily, there are a few simple techniques you can use to help keep your stress levels under control.

Make sure you are taking breaks
As a small business owner, it's important to take breaks and clear your head every once in a while. When you're constantly thinking about your business, it's easy to get bogged down in the details and forget the big picture. Stepping away from your work will help you to refresh your perspective and come back to your business with new energy and ideas.

Exercise regularly
Studies show that less than five per cent of adults are physically active for 30 minutes a day. Just one in three adults gets the recommended amount of exercise each week. Exercise is essential for maintaining your health and well-being, and it can also have a positive impact on your business.

Regular exercise has been shown to improve mood and cognitive function, both of which are important for dealing with the stress of running a business. Exercise can also boost energy levels and fight fatigue, making it easier to get through long days.

Ensure you are getting enough sleep
One of the most important things you can do for your health and your business is to ensure you are getting enough sleep. More than 40 per cent of business owners say they don't get enough sleep at least four nights a week, according to a survey.

This can lead to a number of health problems, including fatigue, anxiety, depression, and a weakened immune system. It can also make it difficult to concentrate, make decisions, and handle stress.

Prioritise time management
As a small business manager, it's important to prioritise time management in order to reduce stress levels. By taking some time each day to plan your tasks and priorities, you'll be better able to handle the demands of running a business.

In addition, it's important to set aside time for yourself on a regular basis. This can involve taking a break from work to relax or exercise, spending time with family and friends, or pursuing a hobby. By taking care of yourself, you'll be better equipped to deal with the stresses of owning a small business.

Learn to delegate tasks
Trying to do everything yourself is not only unrealistic, but it can also lead to burnout. Instead, identify which tasks are crucial for you to handle and delegate the rest to your employees. This will not only free up your time, but it will also help to develop your team's skills and capabilities.
